21 Lessons from 2020

Updated: Jan 5, 2021

The ongoing pandemic will make this January feel different. Self-care will be especially important now to help you feel calm, recharged and grounded and work through the tension of the possibilities that come with a new year and the ongoing pandemic.

If there’s a silver lining as we enter 2021, it’s that the hardest challenges often yield the greatest lessons and growth. Over the past year we've learned a lot of valuable lessons and we'll be moving forward with these in mind.

  1. Don't force things, it doesn't work and you don't know if you'd like the outcome anyway.

  2. Accept your imperfections.

  3. Release judgement, most people are trying their best (including you).

  4. Make space for rest and play, ideally outdoors.

  5. Invest in your meaningful relationships and connect with emotionally mature people.

  6. Show, don't tell. People don't like to be told what to do. If you want to get a message across, exemplify that message yourself.

  7. Believe in yourself, if you don't, no one else will.

  8. Be honest with yourself when you're blaming someone. Often you are upset with yourself about the part you played in the situation. Without forcing anything, learn the lessons and let go.

  9. Don't seek permission or approval. Usually when you do this, it's because you haven't taken the time to get quiet and crystallise your thoughts around a topic or gain confidence around it. You have the answers within.

  10. Talking things through is different than seeking advice. Be mindful of which you're doing and be conscious of who you seek advice from. Most people mean well, but are looking at life from their very unique lens.

  11. Expand your self-awareness.

  12. Don't let self-doubt take over. When in doubt, journaling can be a great tool to clarify your thinking and build confidence.

  13. You are only in competition with your previous self.

  14. Look for the lesson and opportunity in everything.

  15. Focus and limit your distractions like your success and joy depended on it.

  16. Stop self-analysis when you're down or tired.

  17. Acknowledge your feelings, label them and they will diminish in strength. Don't suppress any feelings, they are all teaching you something.

  18. Personal growth is a top priority, think progress over perfection always.

  19. When you notice that you're resisting something, be curious about it. Usually with awareness, you will become less resistant and able to accept it. This doesn't mean you have to accept a "bad" circumstance forever. It means being honest about where you're at so you can assess, heal and move forward.

  20. The best investment you can make is in yourself. Don't wait to be chosen, choose yourself and invest in your goals, your ideas, your wellbeing.

  21. Write down your goals, according to one study you are 42% more likely to achieve them if. you do.
