For many, a "Tarot card reading" conjures up images of a woman in a flowing dress, leaning over a small table in a dark room, foretelling impending doom.
What Is a Tarot Card Reading?
But that's not what Tarot cards are all about. In fact, they're not even meant to tell you your future. As the occult organisation The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn says, "The most powerful sources of information come from within; the Tarot aids in coming in contact with one's Higher Self." Tarot card reading is essentially the practice of using tarot cards to gain insight into the past, present or future by formulating positive questions and then drawing and interpreting cards.
Two Types of Readings
When doing a reading, one important thing to consider is that there are two types of Tarot readings: question readings and open readings.
In question readings, you address a specific question. Tarot is not intended to answer specific yes or no questions. Most say it also shouldn't be used to make decisions, but instead should be used as a guide to help you make the decision yourself. As a result, the way a question is stated is very important. Tarot reader and teacher Joan Bunning gives this advice when doing a question reading:
Keep your options open. Maybe the reading will provide the extra bit of clarity that you’re looking for and with it confidence in your decision, but ideally it's best to have an open mind for your reading.
Your question should be focused, but not overly detailed. Instead of looking at one very specific aspect of a problem, find a way to look at it more broadly.
Focus on yourself rather than someone else.
Be positive. Instead of asking why an event hasn’t happened, ask what you can do to ensure the event happens.
Open readings on the other hand, address the larger aspects of your life rather than a specific question or problem. They're often done when you're entering a new phase of life, like getting married, moving or starting a family.
History of Tarot Cards
According to Slate, tarot cards likely originated in Italy during the late 14th or early 15th century. The oldest known surviving set, known as the Visconti-Sforza deck, was created for the Duke of Milan’s family around 1440. The cards were used to play a bridge-like game known as tarocchi, popular at the time among nobles. The game spread to other European countries, including southern France, where it was eventually renamed tarot. The cards were not regarded as mystical until the late 18th century, when the occult came into popularity. The intrigue of tarot cards continued to spread as Europe’s fascination with the occult grew. Later, mystical groups in the US turned tarot into a fad during the early 1900s. However, there was a negative stigma attached to them until much more recently.
Tarot’s Popularity Today
In Silicon Valley, the world tech hub, spring is synonymous with developer conferences and state-of-the-art software presentations. In 2018, those events were running side by side with a rapidly growing trend - tarot card reading which was unexpectedly becoming a craze among "techies".
Facebook's F8 developers conference in San Jose, California, first gave prominence to tarot cards with three tables set up in the open-air activities zone where "seers" read the fortunes and the futures of people in the long lines that developed there. Around the same time, another tech giant, Microsoft, also included a tarot table at its E2 educators conference in Paris, where another long line formed.
Given the apparent paradox between the interest in tarot among the typically more fact-based, rational and down-to-earth engineers, programmers and other tech professionals, those who are participating in the trend say they're treating it basically as just good fun. Even though many still won't proudly admit to their readings, tarot readings are becoming more and more common for CEOs, business people and individuals from all walks of life to have readings. Whether it's just for good fun or to get clarity on situations, tarot readings can be motivating, inspiring and full of interesting insights.
