Hiring a coach requires commitment and isn't cheap, but for ambitious professionals who feel stuck, lacking confidence or unsure about what the next step should be, a coach can be invaluable. And, no one is too old or too young, too accomplished or too unaccomplished to benefit from a coach. The previous CEO of Google, Eric Schmidt, said the best advice he ever got was to hire an executive coach. When board member, John Doerr initially suggested this, Schmidt resisted because like most people, he didn't think he needed a coach. But in an interview with Fortune Magazine, he said “everyone needs a coach.”⠀

The advice came from the famous venture capitalist, John Doerr who recommended a coach to Schmidt whilst he was CEO of Google in 2001. Schmidt confesses he initially resented the advice because he was CEO of one of the fastest growing firms on the planet and was “pretty experienced.”⠀ “Why would I need a coach,” Schmidt said, “Am I doing something wrong?” Schmidt’s initial thoughts on hiring a business coach were disintegrated when he took Doerr’s advice. His initial feeling to resist was because he did not really understand what a coach does.⠀ ⠀ “My argument was, how could a coach advise me if I’m the best person in the world at this? But that’s not what a coach does. A coach is somebody who looks at something with another set of eyes, describes it to you in his/her words, and discusses how to approach the problem.”⠀ And coaching isn’t just for star CEOs. College students nearing graduation can benefit from having the guidance and expertise of a career coach to help land their first jobs in areas of interest. Likewise, seasoned professionals with many prospects could benefit from the counseling and reassurance of a career coach to help them successfully advance. Professionals looking to change careers could also benefit from the support of a career coach to help them make a seamless transition into a more suitable and fulfilling career. ⠀ It is no exaggeration to say that everyone can benefit from coaching. Many people seem to think the only time you "should" work with a coach is when you want to make a big life change like starting a business, changing careers, moving countries or negotiating a salary. Coaching can be an incredibly beneficial tool in big moments like those, but can also be helpful in so many other situations!⠀ You could work with a career coach on developing particular skills, like negotiating or being an impactful leader, incorporating your values into your life, building confidence and/or creating new healthy habits to replace old harmful ones. The possibilities are endless! Likewise, life and health coaches and personal trainers can help you optimise your health, lose weight, overcome burnout, understand and improve key relationships, get stronger, prepare for a life event, and much more. ⠀ Coaches can help you move forwards and achieve the goals that are important to you. So, whether you’re at the beginning, middle, or nearing the end of your career, a career coach is beneficial for your career success and fulfilment and will have you covered no matter what your goals are. Interested in coaching?
